The History
Tracing its origins back many millennia, the practice of oil pulling was originally practiced by the ancient Indian high priests as a form of detoxification and purification. This practice was passed on to the population through sacred teachings. The first recorded use of oil pulling was written in the ancient Ayurvedic medicinal texts over 3,000 years ago. These texts are still revered to this day and many of the ancient medicinal techniques are still practiced as a way to improve the natural balance of the body and to bring oneself back into equilibrium with nature.

The Benefits
Your mouth is literally teeming with microbes, some are beneficial and others can be detrimental. The beneficial microbes are essential for your oral health, they line your inner mouth as well as your throat and nasal cavity. Detrimental bacteria and toxins are also present inside your mouth. They accumulate in your mouth throughout the day and over time can result in serious health effects such as dental decay, halitosis (bad breath), gingivitis, periodontal disease as well as heart disease and also lung disease.
The practice of oil pulling involves placing a natural plant based oil, such as coconut oil in your mouth and swirling it around the oral cavity for a number of minutes. The oil has a unique quality which slowly draws out the impurities from inside the mouth and oral cavity. Harmful bacteria and toxins such as Streptococcus mutans, which is the primary contributor of tooth decay can all be removed and potentially eliminated with regular use of this method.
Swirl the oil around in your mouth for a number of minutes. The longer you can hold the oil in your mouth, the more toxins that can be drawn out. Be cautious not to swallow any of the oil, not because the oil is harmful, but because you do not want to ingest all of the toxins that have just been drawn from the crevices of your mouth. The purpose is to spit out the oil with along with all of the harmful elements that have been extracted from your gums, teeth and tongue.
When you put it in your mouth and work it around your teeth and gums the oil “pulls” out bacteria and other debris from your gums and enamel. As simple as it is, oil pulling has a very powerful detoxifying effect
Natural alternative to conventional mouthwash
The underside of the tongue is where substances are most easily absorbed into the blood stream, therefore you should be cautious of using conventional alcohol-based mouthwashes as some have been shown to be carcinogenic over time. Next time you are in the toiletries aisle of your local supermarket take a look at the back of a bottle of conventional mouthwash, read the ingredients, all of this is essentially absorbed into your body with each daily use.
Apart from being linked to some carcinogenic effects, alcohol-based mouthwash is also known to potentially eliminate all beneficial microbes and bacteria from inside your oral cavity. Thus disrupting the delicate balance of your inner mouth which can lead to many long-term oral health issues. Most conventional mouth washes have a PH level of between 4 and 4.5, which is on the acidic end of the spectrum which can easily result in the premature erosion of tooth enamel.
